Common wording mistakes
- ✓Hiding the cost. If guests are paying for their own dinner, tickets or drinks, say so on the invitation, not when the bill arrives.
- ✓Giving one time for a surprise party. List an arrival time well before the reveal, or late guests will walk in alongside the guest of honor.
- ✓Using a vague dress code. "Festive" means different things to different people, so say what you mean, such as "cocktail attire" or "jeans are fine."

How do you say no gifts on a birthday invitation?
